He tauranga uta, he toka tū moana - Leading with clarity and courage
This session has been inspired by the whakataukī that it is named for. In times of challenge and change school leaders need to have clarity regarding their purpose. They need to be unrelenting in the commitment to creating the conditions where their people, particularly ākonga are able to thrive. This requires steadfastness and a deep understanding of their ‘true north’.
Alignment to the Niho Taniwha framework will be evidenced and interwoven through this session.
- Whai: scaffolding questions are used to provoke and support reflection and deeper thinking.
- Ako: participants are challenged to identify what ‘kairangi’ in their own context will look, sound and feel like when creating their ‘tauranga uta’. They are supported to use Tū Rangatira as a source of leadership theory (kairangi) specific to Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Mau: participants are asked to identify specific actions and the associated success metrics for both ākonga and kaimahi that will impact on the creation of their ‘tauranga uta’. They are asked to identify the deliberate acts of leadership that they will need to engage in to support the improvement actions and to be the ‘toka tū moana’. They are invited to consider scenarios of common barriers, to collaboratively identify ways that these could be approached.
- Tipu: active reflection questions are posed at the end of the session, and each participant will be invited to design the best ways for monitoring their strategies for the creation of their ‘tauranga uta’ and leadership progress to being ‘he toka tū moana’.
Honouring and enacting Te Tiriti o Waitangi is embedded throughout this session. Explicit connection is made when participants invited to align deliberate acts of leadership promoted during this session to the principles and articles of TToW and resource developed by Tātai Aho Rau | Core Education is shared, discussed and aligned to their own see/hear/feel contextual descriptors.
