Event description

Description

HOPEWALK is a movement to bring greater awareness around the issue of suicide and promote suicide prevention. Community members come together for a Public Walk of Hope and in Memory, united in a sea of yellow TShirts, Banners and Signs! Why yellow? Yellow is the International colour for Suicide Awareness.

HopeWalk Tauranga 2019 will be a 3.8km walk starting at Memorial Park at 1pm (T Shirt Pickup and Food Trucks available from 11am-12.55pm) and ending at Tauranga Fish & Dive at Marine Park (Sulphur Point). This will be the third HopeWalk for Tauranga and is EXTRA special because this event is being organised by local youth group YOUNG CONNEX who are very passionate about leading this cause in their community!

We are now looking for community members to walk with us (all ages welcome!) so we can #BreakTheSilence. Together we are stronger! This is a FREE event to participate in and we encourage everyone in Tauranga to come out and walk with us!

Local Tauranga Business Phreaze Factory will be creating OFFICIAL HOPEWALK T SHIRTS with all proceeds going towards the event and Suicide Prevention in Tauranga and New Zealand. CLICK HERE to purchase yours today - please note, these will not be on sale on the day and must be purchased from this link.

A huge thank you to our growing list of sponsors and supporting organisations for this event: ROAD SAFE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT BAY OF PLENTY / PHREAZE FACTORY / TAURANGA FISH AND DIVE / MAI FM / MOBILE SYSTEMS / CROMBIE LOCKWOOD / SMART PAK / NGAI TE RANGI / EMILY MACKLOW / RAPID RELIEF TEAM / DOVES OVER THE BAY.

Please CLICK HERE to see our HopeWalk Tauranga Facebook Page for regular updates!

IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ PARTICIPANT INFORMATION BELOW:

What time do I need to be at the starting point?

Check-In, T Shirt Pickup, Food Trucks and Safety Briefing will be held from 11am. We will be ready to walk at 1pm on the dot!

Will the roads be closed during the HopeWalk?

We work with Police, Traffic Management and Council to provide a safe route for our HopeWalk but please note that you will be participating in the walk AT YOUR OWN RISK. Safety is important for us as this is a family event however, most roads along the route will not be closed off for the march as pedestrian crossings are available at busy intersections.

Are there minimum age requirements to participate in the walk?

No - all ages welcome but it is very important that any tamariki (children) attending the walk are supervised at all times by an Adult as some roads may require crossing at pedestrians and some of the route is also along the waterfront.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Free Parking Available at Memorial Park (starting point) and Marine Park (end point). As this is not a funded event, we are unable to offer buses between the start and finish points so you might like to organise a car pool (either from the end point back to your car, or possibly have someone drop you to the starting point after parking your car at the end point) to meet your transport requirements on the day.

What can I bring into the event?

Please make sure you wear suitable walking shoes (as this is a 3.8km walk), sunscreen/hat, and bring a water bottle. We will make sure water is available at Marine Park but may not have water available along the walk route.

What if it rains on the day?

We will walk Rain or Shine! If there are severe weather conditions however, we will advise any postponement by 10am on the day via the HopeWalk Tauranga Facebook Page so make sure you like the page to keep in the loop!

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Please feel free to email the Young Connex Leadership Group at youngconnex@gmail.com with any queries or their supervisor on 022 687 7832. You could also check out the HopeWalk Tauranga Facebook page for updates.

Do I have to register?

HopeWalk is open to all ages and walks of life. The main reason for registration prior to the walk is to keep a track of numbers we can expect on the day, to keep the event as safe as possible for those participating. We will also be giving a safety briefing before the walk for any walkers who join last minute or do not register beforehand.
