This training course has been designed for caregivers who work in any care setting – homecare, aged residential care and hospital, and who provide palliative and end of life care. The topics presented include: principles of palliative care, managing physical symptoms, care in the last 48 hours of life, communication, loss and grief and self-care.

Caregivers are valuable members of the team providing the greatest level of hands-on care. This course recognises their role and life experience, and promotes confidence in caring for the dying and their families.

Learning Outcomes for Caregivers

  1. Understand the holistic nature of palliative care and the indications for a palliative approach to care
  2. Understand the integration of Te Whare Tapa Wha model of care in the end of life process
  3. Understand the concept of total pain, including assessment and management
  4. Demonstrate effective communication in relation to patient, whānau and as part of the health care team
  5. Recognise signs of imminent death
  6. Explore ethical issues at end of life and cultural practices around death
  7. Engage with the concepts of grief, loss and bereavement
