Ignition Kids Book Festival - Gala Evening with leading New Zealand writers/illustrators: Gavin Bishop, Ruby Jones, & Selina Tusitala Marsh.

About this Event

New Zealand's world of children's and young adult literature, storytelling and illustration has talent in abundance.

Join us to celebrate and hear from some of this talent in an evening with three New Zealand superstars as part of the Ignition Kids Book Festival.

GAVIN BISHOP: Invercargill-born Gavin Bishop is an award winning children’s picture book writer and illustrator who lives and works in Christchurch, New Zealand. As author and illustrator of nearly 60 books his work ranges from original stories to retellings of Maori myths, European fairy stories, and nursery rhymes most recently the celebrated and award-winning Aotearoa, and its sequel Wildlife of Aotearoa.

RUBY JONES: Ruby is a Wellington-based illustrator who works primarily in digital form. She is best known for her drawing of two women embracing in a hug with the words ‘this is your home and you should have been safe here’ which was spread widely following the 2019 Christchurch terror attacks. Since then she has illustrated a cover for Time magazine and released her first book All Of This Is For You through Penguin Random House.

SELINA TUSITALA MARSH: Dr Selina Tusitala Marsh (ONZM) is an Auckland-based Pacific poet and scholar of Samoan, Tuvaluan, English, Scottish and French descent. She is a poet and academic, and was the New Zealand Poet Laureate for 2017–2019. More recently she's written and illustrated the book Mophead - a moving graphic memoir of growing up Pasifika in New Zealand.

Gavin and Ruby will talk about writing/illustrating and their sense of identity in their work and the concept of Turangawaewae - a place to stand giving strength and comfort.

The Ignition Festival will present this year's Ignition Excellence Award. Now in its third year this award acknowledges an author or illustrator whose body of work has made a significant contribution to New Zealand, and children's literature in particular. Previous recipients have been Robyn Belton (2018) and Barbara Else (2019).

The keynote address for the evening is from Dr Selina Tusitala Marsh on the essence of storytelling and the essential nature of books in our lives. Selina - known for her thoughtful and energetic scholarship - is known as our 'Fast-talking PI Poet-Laureate'. She will challenge you, invigorate you, and demand of all us that we keep celebrating our place in the pacific and take pride in the various differences that make up the New Zealand isthmus and the vibrant cultures that call Aotearoa and our Pacific neighbourhood home.
