Inaugural lecture for Professor Gavin Brown
The Future of Assessment as a Human and Social Endeavour: Some Inconvenient Truths
2016 Inaugural Professorial Address
Prof. dr. Gavin T. L. Brown, PhD
The University of Auckland
This talk introduces a series of inconvenient truths that research with tests and classroom assessments has identified. Although society needs protection from charlatans through good testing, it turns out our testing and our interactive assessments are actually not very good. These inconvenient truths arise when we examine human and social factors and conditions that interact with our best efforts at robust assessment. The talk concludes with a description of the challenges facing society in general, teaching and schooling, and specifically efforts in testing and classroom assessment in the coming years.
