Event description
Big data, what to do with it and where to from here?

About this Event

The tsunami of data – big, not so big and small – has led to trending discussions in the media, at universities, in companies and amongst various other stakeholders. Many discussions address the analytical tools and methods that can unravel meaningful patterns from unorganised lakes of data. Professor Leo Paas will provide a nontechnical introduction to machine learning techniques and their implications for business decision making.

In particular, Leo will argue that unsupervised machine learning at its core is a simple grouping of entities, e.g., customers, consumers or even parts of a text, while supervised machine learning is for finding variables that are useful to predict specific events, such as product purchases, defaults on loans or customers defections. Leo will also discuss his own research that is aimed at assessing long-term effects of marketing campaigns and research that is relevant for the continuing use of survey data.

This inaugural lecture will result in key strategic insights into analytics and conclude with a brief speculation about the big data driven future.
