"Your amazing brain in health and disease"

Abstract:

The neurons in the brain develop in just six weeks, and for most people they will function faithfully for a lifetime. However, in Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, billions of critical neurons die, causing the classical symptoms of these disorders. Six to ten years prior to the onset of symptoms, the person will have lost their sense of smell and the tell-tale pathologies will be present in the olfactory system. The research I will describe is focused on understanding the earliest brain changes in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, and the possible mechanisms by which these diseases spread in the brain.
