Event description

Description

This full day expedition will enable teachers and leaders to see innovative learning in action! The two schools for this day are Bayfield School (Herne Bay) St Thomas’s School (Kohimarama).

You will see and hear different strategies, systems and processes implemented through two school tours. Time will also be spent unpacking the change management structure required to create the shift in teacher practice.

Participants will have the opportunity to talk to teachers and students in their collaborative spaces as well as opportunities to discuss their own context and reflect to what is seen throughout the day.

We are lucky enough to have the National Library involved in the day as well, they will share insights and strategies to get your school libibrary future focused. The National Library provides advice and support for the leading and development of your school library collection, service and environment.

Participants will provide their own transport between the schools.

This workshop is suitable for primary, intermediate and secondary.

Bayfield School
Due to a very leaky building, 75% of Bayfield School i.e. the main building, was demolished and rebuilt in 2014-15. The replacement building consists of 4 hubs of three classroom spaces, two upstairs and two downstairs, new offices, staffroom, library and storage. Even though the old building was an open plan design, single-cell style teaching was the norm. Since 2014, teaching staff have been working through a change management process with an outside facilitator to assist the significant shift needed to adopt a collaborative learning pedagogy. As it wasn’t going to work for our community (parents or teachers) to have some ILE spaces, and some traditional spaces, the three outlying blocks have since been modified to become flexible learning spaces. We are very proud of how our teams are working together, and particularly pleased to see an improvement in our student achievement data since moving in, in July 2015.

St Thomas School
In 2013 we had a new build on the horizon and as a school were beginning to explore what key skills our learners need for 21st Century learning. This was also a push from the Ministry of Education. This lead us to explore and start our journey around Innovative Learning Pedagogy. Since 2014 we have been working with an outside facilitator looking at what key concepts we as a school would like to embed. Over the past two years all our teams have embraced collaborative teaching and learning, both the practice and theory that sits behind it. As St Thomas’s school is made up of new purpose built classrooms and single cell classrooms, it has been really important that we work within and across teams to share best practice. We are really excited to see our journey continue to grow and to see how our students and teams work closely together in order to raise student achievement.
