Event description
Coming Out can be a source of life, support and well-being for LGBTI+ individuals. To celebrate Human Rights Day we look at parents stories.

About this Event

Trailer

On 10 December 1948 the global community of United Nations declared that all humans on this earth have inalienable rights and freedoms; a right to education, a decent living, health care, and a right to live free from discrimination. International Human Rights Day is an important commemoration of this occasion.

LGBTI+ and Rainbow individuals and communities worldwide are subject to unfair discrimination because of their sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression or sex characteristics. "Coming Out" is a term commonly used to describe when a person decides to tell their parents, family or closest friends about themselves.

"Coming Out" celebrates International Human Rights Day by acknowledging parents and defenders who are a source of life and well-being for LGBTI+ individuals. Parents and their offspring from Russia, Indonesia and Kenya discuss what "Coming Out" meant for them in a 30 minute film entitled "Out and About". The film highlights some influential themes about Coming Out - family, religion, community, HIV Aids.

Wellington City Councillor Fleur Fitzsimmons and Takatāpui / Rainbow youth advocate Toni Duder give their perspective and advice to a number of questions about their "Coming Out" experience as a parent and as one who has "Come Out".

Audience participation is a key element for what we hope this event will achieve for parents, LGBTI+ individuals and allies in Wellington. Statements that address:

  1. Themes/solutions about Coming Out in Wellington
  2. LGBTI+ individuals should be able to "Come Out" wherever they are in the world because...

This free event will conclude with snacks and refreshments.
