All community workers, especially those who work with those who come into contact with the criminal court system, defendants, families or victims.

WHY?

On 1 July this year significant changes to criminal procedure came into force, including changes to terminology, defendant's rights and court process. If you work with those who come into the criminal court system knowing about these changes can help you to help them.

TOPICS COVERED

The seminar is intended as a general overview of the changes.

- Introduction to the Criminal Procedure Act 2011

- Overview of new terminology

- The offence categories that have replaced summary and indictable offences

- The new process including charging documents, timeframes for appearances etc

- When pleas may be required.

Simon Parsons works as a duty solicitor and criminal legal aid lawyer.

The focus of this training will be on the changes to the District Court system, particularly low level chargesm, illustrated using practical, everyday case examples.
