About this event

It’s Our Business is a free training programme for hospitality staff, designed to prevent sexual violence in our venues and communities.

We can make Aotearoa a safer place by empowering and educating our hospitality workforce.

This training, developed by experienced educators and clinicians, explores prevalence, common myths/misconceptions about sexual harm, practical initiatives for prevention and intervention, and how to safely respond to disclosures of harm.

We are committed to creating a safe, strengths-based learning environment where all participants are encouraged to contribute to the training in a way that makes them feel comfortable. Our interactive approach combines a range of different learning methods, including scenario-based learning, small group reflections, media analysis, and take-home written exercises.

As a result of attending this training participants will have the tools to:

Establish a shared language for discussing sexual harm

Understand sexual harassment and assault in the broader context of culture

Understand the impacts of sexual harm

Take practical steps to prevent sexual harm

Establish safe spaces in venues and at events

Respond safely and appropriately to disclosures of sexual harm

Manage robust personal and professional boundaries

Hold up to date information on New Zealand specialist support agencies

This event is free of charge and runs for 4 hours. Attendees will be sent a Zoom link and password in the week leading up to the training.

Due to our funding requirements, participants from Te Whanganui-a-Tara will be prioritised. In the case that more people register than we have capacity for, we may get in touch with you to let you know when we expect to deliver workshops to your region in the future.

We encourage as many staff as possible from businesses to attend, as a key part of this conversation is supporting participants to identify practical prevention initiatives specific to their workplace. RespectEd is hosting two It’s Our Business Sessions – see https://www.eventbrite.co.nz/e/182112191467 for our November session.
