Jack Daniel's Presents: BBQ Mania 2 - Low N Slow BBQ Championship (NZ)


Join us at the Waikato A&P Show this November to find out who will become New Zealand 1st undisputed BBQ champion!

8 categories, 3 events, 2 days, 1 GRAND CHAMPION!




Day one (Saturday 2nd Nov)

Day one consists of four categories; Promoters Challange: Quack-A-Duck, The Battle of the Bullets (pork belly), The GA Beatdown (mystery protein) and Lamb (championship category).

The Battle of the Bullets and the GA Beatdown are optional and are registered as stand-alone events. The Battle of the Bullets may be entered is a team entry (up to 4 members). The GA Beatdown is individual entry only. Both are non-championship categories. I.e. does not impact the national leaderboard and does not count towards the BBQ Mania 2 Grand Champion. They incur an additional entry fee which is to be purchased as a separate ticket in the ticket options.

The Quack-a-Duck category is a non-championship category. I.e. does not impact national leaderboard and does not go towards the BBQ Mania 2 Grand Champion points.

Lamb is a championship category and counts towards the BBQ Mania Grand Champion.





Day two (Sunday 3rd Nov)

Day two consists of the classic ABA championship categories of chicken, ribs, pork and brisket. All points on day two count towards the BBQ Mania Grand Champion





Category Specific Rules

  • GA Beatdown: Mystery protein (Protein supplied and distributed via a ballot).
  • Duck: Any cut (Protein supplied. 3 whole ducks per team).
  • Lamb: Any cut.
  • Battle of the Bullets: Pork Belly (Protein supplied and distributed via a ballot).
  • Chicken: Any cut.
  • Pork Ribs: Spare ribs, St. Louis cut ribs or baby back ribs.
  • Pork (2): Shoulder, neck or Boston Butt.
  • Beef: Brisket flat, brisket point only.





Smoker specific rules

GA Beatdown
Protein must be cooked in its entirety on a Weber GA charcoal BBQ only. Accessories affixed to the GA are deemed part of the BBQ. Examples include a riser, Kettle Kone, rotisserie, Grill Grates or offset plate.

Accessories not affixed to the GA are deemed to not be part of the BBQ. Examples include a Flip N Grate, any other BBQ used for cooking or searing of the protein.

The Battle of the Bullets
Protein must be cooked in its entirety on a bullet smoker. Accessories affixed to the Bullet are deemed part of the BBQ. Examples include a riser, Kettle Kone, rotisserie, Grill Grates or offset plate.

Allowable Bullet Smokers include:

  • Charmate Lawson
  • Fornetto Basso
  • Fornetto Rasso
  • Weber Smokey Mountain
  • Pro Q Ranger Elite
  • Pro Q Frontier Elite
  • Pro Q Excel 20 Elite

Standard NZBA Rules apply to all other categories.

Friday 1st Nov:

5:30pm – 8:00pm: Bump in window 1 (bump in times allocated by promoter)

Saturday 2nd Nov:

7:30am – 8:30am: Bump in window 2 (bump in times allocated by promoter)
9:00am – 9:30am Site inspections (minimum 1 team member present)
9:30am – 10:00am Team briefing, meat ballots and hand in box distribution.
10:00am Cooking window opens (all categories)
2:00pm Judges Course
3:00pm GA Beatdown
4:00pm Quack-A-Duck
5:00pm Battle of the Bullets
6:00pm Lamb
7:00pm Prize giving day one (Bullet, Duck and GA categories only)

Sunday 3rd Nov:

Due to this being a public event bump in and bump out times are strict. No vehicle movement in the event area outside these windows.

Quack-a-Duck

1st Place: Trophy + $250 cash or Undisputed* Champion trophy + $300 cash.
2nd Place: Trophy + $200 cash.
3rd Place: Trophy + $150 cash.

Battle of the Bullets

Reserve Grand Champion

Championship Belt + $1000 cash.

Grand Champion

Championship Belt + $2000 cash or Undisputed* Grand Champion Belt + $3000 cash.

All prize money to be paid 14 working days after the event.

*Undisputed Title: is achieved when the same team wins a category two years consecutively. In the case of each category the 1st place title, trophy and cash prize is replaced by the Undisputed Champion title, trophy and cash prize. In the case of Grand Champion the title, trophy and cash prize are replaced by the Undisputed Grand Champion title, trophy and cash prize.
** Best new team: is achieved by the highest scoring new team. New team is defined as having a team that has never entered in an ABA/NZBA sanctioned BBQ competition. In the case of team name changes/rebrands the team qualifies if the team captain has never competed in an ABA/NZBA sanctioned BBQ event. THE PROMOTERS may use discretion to determine whether a qualifying team is ‘genuine’. THE PROMOTERS decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

‘THE PROMOTER’ is BBQ Investments Ltd, 23D Woodward St, Hamilton, New Zealand.
'THE EVENT' is BBQ Mania 2 (2019).

THE EVENT is sanctioned. The sanctioning body is the New Zealand BBQ Alliance.
Standard NZBA rules will apply to this event.

You must be over 18 years of age to participate in THE EVENT. ID will be checked upon entry and must be held at all times during the event. Attendance at THE EVENT must be evidenced by a paid ticket from Eventbrite. Any teams wishing to include persons under the age of 18 must receive prior written consent from THE PROMOTER. All persons attending must be under strict supervision of a parent or adult guardian at all times.

THE PROMOTER, and any of its event partners will not be held liable for any damage including to persons, loss and loss of property.

Tickets are non-transferable, non-exchangeable and non-refundable. No refunds will be given for poor weather, acts of God or any unforeseen circumstances that would prevent THE EVENT from being run.

THE EVENT will continue even in the event of inclement weather unless the safety of patrons are deemed to be adversely impacted.

THE PROMOTER reserves the right to reschedule THE EVENT and/or change locations.

All bags and containers may be subject to a full search.

No alcohol or alcoholic beverages are permitted at THE EVENT. Attendees may bring their own food and non-alcoholic beverages for own consumption.

Participants must bring their own proteins to cook with unless otherwise stated.

No antisocial paraphernalia is allowed. This includes but is not limited to weapons and gang patches.

Aggressive and/or intoxicated behaviour and any anti-social behaviour at THE EVENT will not be tolerated and may result in eviction, which THE PROMOTER reserves absolute right to implement. In the event that an individual is found to be in breach of THE PROMOTERs behaviour policy the related team will also be asked to leave the competition. THE PROMOTER holds teams responsible for their teams and team members behaviour.

THE PROMOTER maintains the right to cancel ticket purchases of any persons who are deemed not to be suitable for THE EVENT.

Your lanyard/event ID must be worn at all times. if you lose or remove your lanyard, you will be unable to participate in THE EVENT.



Final Remarks

Information packs will be distributed to team captains prior to the event.
