Jack Daniel's Presents BBQ Mania 2018

Join us Labour weekend this October as NZ's top BBQ Pitmasters, Spit Masters and Braai Masters battle it out for their share of $10,000 in cash prizes! Please note: This is not a public event.


Event Schedule

Day One: Saturday 20 October 2018

Bump in window for all teams from 7am-10am.
Site inspections for food safety & equipment (all teams) 10am-10.30am.
Team Briefing & Hand in Boxes distribution 10.30am.
Cooking window opens (all categories) at 11.00am.
Judges Course 1:30pm.
Low 'N' Slow Beatdown Promoter’s Challenge – Hand In 3.00pm.
Spit Master Slam (Platter) - Hand In 5.00pm.
Battle of the Braai (Platter) – Hand In 4.00pm.
Spit Master Slam Prize Giving 6.30pm.

Terms And Conditions

The promoter is BBQ Investments Ltd, 23D Woodward St, Frankton, Hamilton, New Zealand.
'The event' is BBQ Mania 2018.

You must be over 18 years of age to participate in BBQ Mania 2019. ID will be checked upon entry and must be held at all times during event. Attendance at the event must be evidenced by a paid ticket from Eventbrite.

If you are bringing children under the age of 18 years to the event, they must be under strict supervision of a parent or adult guardian at all times. BBQ Investments, and any of its event partners will not be held liable for any damage including to persons, loss and loss of property.

Tickets are non-transferable, non-exchangeable and non-refundable. No refunds will be given for poor weather.

The event will continue even in the event of inclement weather unless the safety of patrons are deemed to be adversely impacted.

BBQ Investments reserves the right to reschedule the event and/or change locations.

All bags and containers may be subject to a full search.

No alcohol or alcoholic beverages are permitted at the event. Attendees may bring their own food and non-alcoholic beverages for own consumption.

Participants must bring their own food to cook with unless otherwise stated.

No antisocial paraphernalia is allowed. This includes but is not limited to weapons and gang patches.

Aggressive and/or intoxicated behaviour and any anti-social behaviour at the event will not be tolerated and may result in eviction, which the promoter reserves absolute right to implement.

The promoter maintains the right to cancel ticket purchases of any persons who are deemed not to be suitable for the event.

Your lanyard must be worn at all times. if you lose or remove your lanyard, you will be unable to participate in the event.


Category Specific Rules

This is a fully sanctioned event. The event will be sanctioned by the New Zealand BBQ Alliance.

Spit Master Slam

The Spit Master Slam is a platter entry.

Proteins must include: Chicken any cut. Beef any cut.

All entries must be presented on the provided tray (approximately 450x350mm).

All proteins must be cooked from a raw state, on site and wholly within the cooking window period.

Only one entry per hand in category per team allowed.

All entries must be presented within the hand in window of 5 minutes before to 5 minutes after the scheduled hand in time.

There must be at least 6 clear portions (can be more) in each box totalling 50g or the equivalent of a small handful per portion.

Teams can hand in any combination of allowed cuts for that protein, provided there are at least 6 (can be more) portions in the box, the portions meet the minimum portion size/weight and the allowed cuts are fully adhered to.

Any garnishes are allowed as part of the entry.

No identifying marks are to be present on the hand in such as deliberate indentations, writing or scratching.

Any type of spit cooker (solid fuel only) may be used. Protein must rotate on the ‘spit’ while cooking. Protein must be completely cooked on the spit cooker.

Proteins must not be brined, rubbed, marinated or cured before the opening of the cooking window.

Proteins may be pre-trimmed before the start of the cooking window.

Cooking units may be pre-heated or started before the cooking window but competition proteins cooking processes must not start prior to the cooking window opening.

Teams are limited to four members or less.

Teams may not sell or distribute food to the General Public unless the appropriate Food License is obtained and only with the consent of the Event Promoter.

One team per cook site only.

The ABA Head Judge will be the sole arbitrator of any dispute and their decision on site at the competition will be final in all cases with no further correspondence entered into by the ABA.

Teams must adhere to all ABA/Event Promoter Rules and/or instruction at all time on site.


Battle of the Braai

The Battle of the Braai is a platter entry.

Proteins must include: Boerewors, Texas Steak (any steak cut allowed), Potjie (any protein).

All entries must be presented on the provided tray (approximately 450x350mm).

All Potjie must be served in the provided cups and placed on top of the provided tray.

All proteins must be cooked from a raw state, on site and wholly within the cooking window period.

Only one entry per hand in category per team allowed.

All entries must be presented within the hand in window of 5 minutes before to 5 minutes after the scheduled hand in time.

There must be at least 6 clear portions (can be more) in each box totalling 50g or the equivalent of a small handful per portion.

Teams can hand in any combination of allowed cuts for that protein, provided there are at least 6 (can be more) portions in the box, the portions meet the minimum portion size/weight and the allowed cuts are fully adhered to.

Any garnishes are allowed as part of the entry.

No identifying marks are to be present on the hand in such as deliberate indentations, writing or scratching.

Only approved Braai and Grill type BBQs may be used. Only Solid fuel may be used to heat and cook the BBQ and protein. Solid fuel is: charcoal, firewood, lump charcoal and briquettes.

Proteins must not be brined, rubbed, marinated or cured before the opening of the cooking window.

Proteins may be pre-trimmed before the start of the cooking window.

Cooking units may be pre-heated or started before the cooking window but competition proteins cooking processes must not start prior to the cooking window opening.

Teams are limited to four members or less.

Teams may not sell or distribute food to the General Public unless the appropriate Food License is obtained and only with the consent of the Event Promoter.

Pork Ribs: Spares, St. Louis or Baby backs allowed.

Lamb: Any cut.

Beef: Brisket, Short ribs, Cheek, or Chuck.
