Abstract
What does the word bunpō (grammar) evoke for you? Is grammar still considered essential in foreign language education? And what should nihongo kyoiku bumpo—pedagogical grammar in Japanese language education actually entail?
Over the past several decades, as Japanese language education has evolved and expanded, the role of grammar in this context has shifted, and approaches to its study have been compelled to undergo a transformation. This presentation will examine the historical trajectory of these developments and introduce recent initiatives aimed at constructing a more effective and contextually appropriate pedagogical grammar in Japanese language education.
