Event description

Description

Make your own jewellery using two different manufacturing processes.... this experience includes a day in the MOTAT forge learning the craft of the blacksmith, and 3 days in a jewellers workshop crafting jewellery items of your own design...

Due to the nature of this event participation is limited to 12 people, participants must be 14 yrs+.

Cost: $200 per person + booking fee

Venues: MOTAT Forge Experience (10.00 am - 4.00 pm), 805 Great North Road, Western Springs and

The Peter Minturn Goldsmith School (10.00am - 2.30pm), 353 New North Road, Kingsland.

Day 1 –

After a safety briefing and instructions on the tools and equipment your first day at the Peter Minturn Goldsmith School is spent making a simple D profile ring out of sterling silver. From stamping, cutting, bending, soldering, sanding and polishing, this process is hands-on and covers all the techniques you use in making your pendant necklace.

Days 2, 3 and 4

One group per day in the MOTAT forge where they will work alongside an experienced Blacksmith. Using traditional tools such as an anvil, mallets, tongs, and pincers you will heat a steel billet in the forge and forge a metal shape on the anvil. Once you have learned the basics you start work on your personal object, after design and prototyping you form your object from a hot steel billet using blacksmithing techniques. If there's time at the end of the day you use your smartdevice to gather ideas for the necklace you will be making in the next few days.

The remaining groups work at Peter Minturn Goldsmith School to design and complete a second silver project – a pendant or necklace. Come along with some design ideas sketched out (Pinterest and Google are great sources of ideas), after a consultation to check that your design is achievable you will manufacture it over 2 days.
