Event description

Description

Sione Monu is an experimental, multidisciplinary Tongan artist and a core contributor to the queer, indigenous arts collective, FAFSWAG. He will be hosting two workshops.

Connecting place, people and the different environments in which he works, Sione Monu’s workshop brings together his extended family and the spiritual and ecological contexts of art-making in Tonga and Tāmaki Makaurau.

He will share insights from his experimental work with nimamea'a tuikakala, the Tongan fine art of flower design using the kahoa or Tongan garland.

Sione takes us on a journey from the first arrival of Tongan migrants and the art-making processes they brought with them, to their role in the contemporary diaspora.

Materials will be on hand for you to produce your very own kahoa garland to take home. Both workshops are suitable for all ages.
