A Kāinga Ora Building Momentum Event: Low carbon passive approaches to better buildings
About this event
You are warmly invited to join us for a range of informative, inspiring and insightful presentations as we collaboratively learn about better building approaches. This event is part of the Kāinga Ora Building Momentum programme’s event series with a networking opportunity after the formal programme.
Low carbon passive approaches to better buildings
For Kāinga Ora to meet its responsibilities under the Climate Change Response Amendment (Zero Carbon) Act and its own Carbon Neutral Housing aspirations, the life cycle carbon pollution of our new buildings must decrease by around five times.
Our focus is on delivering quality warm, dry, healthy and comfortable homes that will house families for generations to come. Our building standards exceed the current NZ Building Code in these areas and we’re actively exploring how we can go further to lead the way in sustainability as well as reducing carbon and energy costs.
The Passive House Standard is recognised internationally as a best practice benchmark for indoor environmental quality and health performance, especially when applied to social housing.
Kāinga Ora is leading the industry by example in adopting the Passive House Standard in one of our key pilot projects, a three level walk up apartment building in Māngere, Auckland. This enables us to achieve MBIE’s Building for Climate Change 2035 ‘final’ thermal performance cap ahead of their draft expectations.
Come along and hear from the project team about how they made this happen, and what they learnt.

The Bader Ventura project reflects our commitment under the Kāinga Ora ‘Building Momentum’ Construction Plan to be a catalyst for industry-wide transformation, particularly in the areas of sustainability and innovation.
Building Momentum outlines how Kāinga Ora will work with the wider construction industry to improve the way state housing is delivered in New Zealand.
The Plan focuses on five main priority areas: partnering, innovation, quality, delivery and sustainability.
