Description

Kaitiaki Ahurea 2017 is NZQA accredited Level two training course offered by Te Rau Matatini in a two day wānanga.


Kaupapa

The original course was provided in the South Island and was revised in late 2016. Kaitiaki Ahurea offers a program to improve public health and health promotion knowledge and leadership skills of the health workforce who are working with Māori communities.


Wānanga

This course is offered to non Māori and Māori workforces in the South Island who work in public health, health promotion and communities with a specific interest in enhancing Māori health outcomes. Registration is free for the 2 Day wānanga and details are as follows:


Ōtepoti: 17 October 2017 10:00am - 5:00pm

Ōtepoti: 18 October 2017 09:00am - 4:00pm

Venue: To be confirmed, attendees will be advised prior to course start date.

Note: Follow Up session for presentation for Ōtepoti will be h eld on the 15 November 2017 to be held at Araiteuru Marae.

• Cultural dimensions of illness and wellbeing
• Historical perspectives of Māori and Health Promotion
• Māori perspectives of Health Promotion Campaigns
• Rationale for Health Promotion
• New Zealand Public Health Policy
• New Zealand Health Promotion Frameworks
• Identifying Challenges with health promotion campaigns
• Key aspects in health promotion delivery to Māori communities


Desired Learnings

To increase the health workforce’s knowledge and understanding of health promotion from a Māori cultural context.
To establish tools and skills to implement health promotion activities appropriate for Māori communities.


Professional Development Hours

Wānanga: 20 hours (including assessment)
Self-directed learning: 10 hours
TOTAL: 30 hours or points

A two day wānanga can be adapted according to time and frequency, and for either separate or combined Māori and non-Māori health professionals located in the South Island. This will be negotiated as numbers of people indicate interest per region for the program.


Time Committment

Te Rau Matatini proposes to deliver three wānanga (workshops) in the South Island from September –
December 2017. Each wananga will involve two days for learning and one or two day wānanga where you
will be expected to complete two assessments:

1. a kete (collection) of health promotion resources and
2. Group presentation.

A textbook, and resources will be supplied
