Description

This workshop, Kaitiakitanga, is part of Hine E Hine - a celebration of women and environmental action https://www.facebook.com/events/854684071570527/

Kaitiakitanga in a concept often used to articulate Māori relationships to the natural environment. It has been included in environmental forums as a way to support Māori aspirations with their kin of the natural world. This workshop will provide participants an opportunity to explore aspects of Kaitiakitanga through discussions about place, whakapapa, intergenerational knowledge, spirituality and engagement with resources. This will then lead to conversations about kaitiakitanga practiced within urban spaces such as Hamilton. The aim of the workshop is to show and share how kaitiakitanga advocates for the well-being of both people and nature.

Workshop facilitator: Erana Walker.

Erana Walker is a Phd candidate at the University of Waikato. Originally from Whāngarei, she moved to Hamilton in 2010 to pursue a degree in Environmental Planning and has remained here since. She has been interested in Kaitiakitanga since being part of a river restoration project during her high school years and credits this experience as a pivotal moment in steering her towards studying in Waikato. Her previous research for her master's degree analysed how her own hapū in Whāngarei understand and apply kaitiakitanga. She is now undertaking research to seek out how urban Māori understand and apply kaitiakitanga in the urban space of Hamilton.
