Event description
A guided cycling tour based around water landmarks in the central city.

About this Event

How has water shaped the lives of people in central Tāmaki?

Ko au te awa, ko te awa ko au – I am the river and the river is me.

Join Auckland Libraries’ Kōrero Bike, in partnership with community-based group Whakamanatia, on a unique bike tour celebrating the rich history woven through our local area. Starting from Te Ara o Hape (Karangahape Ridge) we’ll journey alongside the path of Waihorotiu stream, flowing down to the former historic pipi beds at Takutai square– from ridge to sea.

The ancient Waihorotiu, once a bustling life-giving stream, was boarded up and pumped full of sewerage in the 1800s. As we navigate its course, we explore aspects of Kaitiakitanga and Mauri, sharing kōrero along various tohu whenua (landmarks or public art). These speak to both the ecology of relationships that are present within our taiao (natural environment) and the regenerative projects that work to restore & uphold the mana and mauri within our urban environment.

E kato ana ngā awa katoa ki te moana – all rivers lead to the sea.
