About the speaker

Dr Isabelle Sin

Isabelle Sin is a Fellow at Motu Economic and Public Policy Research and a Principal Investigator at Te Pūnaha Matatini Centre of Research Excellence. She holds a PhD in Economics from Stanford University, California. Her research at Motu has spanned labour economics and economic history, including such questions as how government policies affect migration and the labour market, what drives the gender pay gap, and what determines the international diffusion of knowledge.

About the topic:

Description of research: We use a decade of annual wage and productivity data from New Zealand’s Linked Employer-Employee Database to examine different explanations for the gender wage gap in New Zealand. We find little of the wage gap can be explained by the types of industries or firms that women work in or by gender differences in productivity. We next study how gender wage gaps that are not explained by productivity differences vary across types of employee and with industry characteristics. The patterns we find are more consistent with taste discrimination on the part of employers, or sexism, being an important driver of the wage gap and are less consistent with statistical discrimination or gender differences in bargaining power being major factors.
