Topic:

New Zealand shares the global challenge of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in order to limit harms from climate change. Successive New Zealand Governments have participated in international processes. Out of those international processes have emerged a number of different targets for future reductions in emissions. To date, however, actions to achieve those targets have been limited in scope and have had little impact. The current government is now proposing legislation to give effect to its target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

In 2017, the NZ Productivity Commission was asked to inquire into the options available that could enable New Zealand to meet its GHG emissions targets in the most efficient manner. The Commission’s report on the transition to a low emissions economy was released in 2018. The Commission’s Chair, Murray Sherwin presents the findings and recommendations of that report.
