About this event

Bahasa Indonesia, or the language of Indonesia, is spoken by more than 250 million people in Southeast Asia, in all of Indonesia as well as in Malaysia and Singapore. Historically a trading language that linked people across maritime Southeast Asia, contemporary Indonesian is comparatively easy pick up for basic communication purposes, whether you plan a tourism trip to Bali or for business calls in Jakarta.

The New Zealand Asia Institute is offering a structured series of Indonesian language courses in 2020. Each course runs for eight weeks, with classes held once a week. The courses offered in 2020 held in the Auckland Business School, Sir Owen G Glenn Building, 12 Grafton Road, Auckland:

• Level 1, Thursday, 20 February – 9 April. For those with no or very little prior exposure to the language. (Room 315, Level 3)

• Level 2, Thursday, 30 April – 18 June. For those with “survival” communication ability. (Room 315, Level 3)

• Level 3, Thursday, 30 July – 17 September. For those competent to engage in simple conversations on everyday topics. (Room 3116, Level 3)

• Level 4, Thursday, 22 October – 10 December. For more advanced learners looking to develop their conversation skills. (Room 315, Level 3)

Complete beginner or advanced learner?

The courses are designed to provide for progression in language skills, with each level picking up from the point where the previous course ended. If you have already taken our Indonesian classes previously or have some grounding in the language, you may want to skip the first level or two. Please enquire if you are uncertain which is the right level for you.

The courses will be taught by experienced Indonesian instructors, with qualifications from universities in Indonesia, Australia and the U.S. The core course book used will be Ayo Berbahasa (1 and 2), supplemented by other teaching materials and texts.
