About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

Join us as we hear from Dr. Mohini Vidwans as she shares her research on the bicultural accounting legacy of Sir Hēnare Ngata. Her presentation explores how Ngata uniquely integrated Māori values, practices, and worldviews with Anglocentric accounting principles to support Māori communities—offering enduring insights for today’s approaches to social and environmental accounting.

Sir Hēnare Ngata became New Zealand’s first Māori Public Accountant in 1949. Drawing on his deep understanding of both Indigenous knowledge systems and Western frameworks, he played a pivotal role in helping Māori navigate land development, business finance, and government policy. His ability to bridge Māori land law and holistic cultural principles with mainstream accounting tools created a bicultural model that continues to inform and inspire governance and reporting practices today.
