The M3S Competition provides students with an opportunity to engage in mathematics and statistics, working in teams of three on problems that are both fun and challenging.
The competition aims to challenge students with an interest in maths and stats, while also getting them to explore career options and subjects to study at university. We encourage smaller schools to work together and to create a team with students from more than one school. Bigger schools are free to enter more than one team (up to two).
• Teams will consist of three Year 12 students (students need to be enrolled as Year 12 students but do not need to be studying mathematics at NCEA Level 2).
• The format will be similar to that of the MMTA Mathex
• Schools can enter up to two teams, providing numbers permit.
• No electronics (calculators, cellphones or any communication device) allowed during the competition.
• The level of questions will vary but content required will be up to NCEA Level 1 Mathematics and Statistics. Students should not need to learn new material for the competition. The aim of the competition is to emphasize problem solving skills and the ability to work as a team.
At the end of the competition, we will have prize-giving along with a light afternoon tea.
