Welcome to Massey University STEM and Health Day 2024! Join us for an exciting day filled with interactive activities, workshops, and presentations showcasing Massey's STEM and Health offering.

This in-person event will be held at Massey University, where you can explore various workshops and engage with expert academics in the fields of Science and Health. Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of innovation and discovery.

Students will register for 3 workshops based on their interests. Workshops will be allocated on a first-in first-served basis. Please fill in one form for each student participating.

Workshops available:

Accommodation- Come meet our wonderful accommodation staff and have a tour of accommodation options on the Manawatu Campus.

Agricultural Farm tour- meet our academic staff, hear about scholarship opportunities and tour the Massey Farms surrounding the university.

Food Technology- Ice-cream taste test. Test your tastebuds when the ice-cream flavour doesn't match the flavour. Learn about the Food Technology programme and the first year ice-cream project.

Computer Science- We will look at some source code for a simple game and see how we can write our own source code. Then use a compiler to turn it into a playable game.

Maths & Stats- You will be competing against your peers in some fun (and frustrating) games, and discover how maths and stats can give you the x-factor to succeed.

Sport and Exercise- A range of fun, engaging activities exploring the world of Sport and Exercise.

Psychology- What is Psychology? Explore the many different subject areas Psychologists are influencing in this broad and interesting feild.

Nursing- Come and see our Nursing Simulation Suite and meet our Nursing Academics.

Animal Science- Come and explore the science behind animal husbandry and production. We will be looking at animal physiology, nutrition and products.

Agricultural Science- Useful plants: Can you recognise important plants and seeds grown by farmers? Where do we grow out plants? Weeds keep growing and annoying farmers, what can we do?

Horticultural Science- How sweet is the fruit we eat and why is this important? Come and measure the sugar in fruit and learn how this can affect the consumer and the grower.

Biology- In the lab we work with DNA and proteins on a microscale. Learn how to use a micropipette to accurately measure small volumes and make art. We will also use microscopes to examine micro-organisms and human cells, load an agarose gel or have a go at dissecting a fruit fly brain.

Earth Science I- How does different types of soils affect our ability to grow food. Get your hands dirty with different soil types to learn how soil affects vegetable growth.

Earth Science II- Rocks and Volcanoes! different rock types will be on display, learn about volcanoes, earthquakes and all things earthy. Make a digital lahar with our augmented reality sandbox.

Plant Science- Come explore the secret lives of plants. Plants have adapted to a huge range of varieties, you will investigate how they have achieved the diversity we see around us.

Chemistry- Come and have a go a cell phone spectronomy where you will find out how much blue dye is in powerade.

Ecology and Zoology- Find out how Zoolologists and Ecologists try to understand the world, from looking at the insides of animals to tracking them.
