This month: “Take care - Don't be seduced by the idea” by Steve Hamilton, Vento Medical Consulting

For most entrepreneurs, their startup business is all about an 'amazing idea’. The technology that they have developed and patent-protected becomes ’their idea’’ and they are justifiably proud of it.

With medical technology, the ‘idea’ is extremely important and the scientists and clinicians involved in development quickly become passionate cheer-leaders for ’the idea’.

Once the idea has been sufficiently developed, IP is then secured (often within a startup business) and this IP is often used to determine the business-value at start-up. These initial steps are affirming and exciting for the entrepreneur and startup founders. Then the tough stuff starts; to begin navigating the complex regulatory systems around the world to receive ‘permission’ for the idea to be manufactured and introduced into various markets. Then finally the business starts figuring out how the idea will be sold and how will it be paid for (reimbursement).

We end up going along this in a linear progression; 1. Idea - 2. IP - 3. Regulatory - 4. Reimbursement

This talk will try to encourage attendees to challenge this approach. How do we gain better customer and reimbursement insight EARLIER - and how can we prevent the danger of becoming "seduced by the idea”?

Steve Hamilton is well known within the NZ healthcare sector, having a long history working across medical technology and device businesses in senior management positions. Steve has managed NZ multinational businesses and medical technology startups. Steve is noted for working closely with senior clinicians, administrators, policy-makers and the academic community. Steve is the founder of Vento Medical Consulting, a business working across key international markets and offering a range of strategic services and advice to NZ based medical technology startups and established businesses within the international health technology sector.
