Mental Health First Aid - For Whaanau
Tue, 22/11/2016, 10:00 AM – Wed, 23/11/2016, 10:00 AM NZDT
Whilst most people know something about common first aid problems such as cuts and grazes, coughs and colds, sprains and strains, there is widespread ignorance of mental health issues.
Regular first aid courses are recognised for improving people’s skills in giving initial and appropriate aid in a medical emergency, but most of these courses don’t address how we can help someone who is having mental health difficulties.
Mental health concerns are much more common that you think. In New Zealand, approximately one in five adults will experience mental illness in any given year. That means that all members of our community can expect to have close contact with someone experiencing a mental illness. Would you know how to respond to them?
Our MHFA workshop teaches you how to assist someone who is developing a mental illness or is in a mental health crisis.
Mental illness topics covered:
- Substance misuse
Mental health crisis topics covered:
- Suicidal thoughts and behaviour
- Panic attacks
- Severe psychotic states
- Severe effects from alcohol or drug misuse
- Aggressive behaviour
During this workshop, you will learn the ALGEE five step action plan:
Approach, assess and assist any crisis
Listen without judging
Give support and information
Encourage relevant professional help
Encourage other supports
