Abstract
Transport planners must decide whether the use of e-bikes and e-scooters (micromobility) will grow to become a mainstream transport mode or are a distraction from planning our future transport networks. In research commissioned by Waka Kotahi, Matt Ensor investigated the potential for mode shift to micromobility by 2030. The results suggest that we are undervaluing the building of active transport infrastructure and the importance of future forms of micromobility.
Shared micromobility emerged in New Zealand in 2017 and is growing in popularity. The introduction of shared vehicles comes with opportunities and challenges for both central and local government. Te Manatū Waka Ministry of Transport will provide an overview of some of the work underway to encourage best practice approaches to the safe regulation of shared e-scooters, and tell you more about how data can be used to support evidence-based policy making.

Joren is a member of the Strategic Policy and Innovation team at Te Manatū Waka Ministry of Transport. Along with work on drone integration in New Zealand and horizon scanning, Joren chairs a micromobility working group as a conduit between local and central government and relevant stakeholders to discuss challenges and opportunities related to micromobility in Aotearoa.
