About this event

Moving on Methane: Our Opportunity for Technology, Climate and Trade, hosted by Te Puna Umanga Venture Taranaki, the regional development agency, is a fast-paced single day event exploring a range of emerging and established technologies related to reducing methane emissions in dairy farming.

At this inaugural event, attendees (online or in-person) will hear from a wide range of speakers including New Zealand’s largest dairy customers, cutting-edge researchers, farmers, and key industry stakeholders to learn about the current state of play of methane emissions and reduction options both locally and globally.

Mooving on Methane will delve into our current challenges and future opportunities including:

  • What competitive advantages local farmers and tech entrepreneurs reap from being a leader in this space.
  • The potential impacts on trade and climate.
  • Who and what is at the forefront of methane mitigation/reduction initiatives and tools in Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world?
  • The tools that could work on New Zealand’s dairy farms pasture-based farms and grass-fed animals.
  • How could their development be supported, advanced, commercialised, scaled up and rolled out in Aotearoa New Zealand?

Key agenda items:

  • Our emissions profile: This is an important foundation discussion for the event. How does agriculture contribute to our emissions profile in Aotearoa and how could reducing methane provide an opportunity to advance our technology, climate and trade goals?
  • Dairy industry/companies perspective: Their plans in relation to the above and to meet the needs of global customers.
  • Cutting-edge technology: Hear from private sector companies, entrepreneurs, agencies and researchers who are advancing methane mitigation options and solutions – ranging from genetics to methane reducing animal feed and pasture and everything in between.
  • Farmer perspectives: What are they already doing and what tools could be workable?
  • Actions and solutions: Fostering momentum and a genuine pathway around methane reduction that could enhance the value and competitiveness of the agriculture industry in New Zealand on the global stage, while recognising the importance of intergenerational stewardship, kaitiakitanga, of the land.
