Event description

Description

For West Papua freedom fighters, the 1st of July is Resistance Day.

In 1961, West Papua first raised its independence flag, between the withdrawal of Dutch colonisers and the invasion of a U.S.-backed Indonesian occupation. They raised the Morning Star flag, in 1961.

Ten years later, Indonesia had run a sham referendum, asking a handful of West Papuans whether they wanted to assimilate with Indonesia - at gunpoint.

In 1971, the flag of independence was raised again in defiance - but since then, over half a million West Papuans have been murdered by Indonesian forces.

Join us on Resistance Day - in solidarity with the ongoing West Papuan resistance.

Join Gemma and Paul @5pm from Yoga Rhapsody for some live music and yoga together. This will be a beautiful experience not to be missed.

Then at @7pm see Matiu Te Huki and more beautiful live musicians, and dance the evening away!

Kombucha and some healthy and delicious kai will be available throughout the event.

This event is hosted by Morning Star Yoga - we support the yoga community to examine its ties to Indonesia, and support freedom for the Pacific through yoga practice.

See you on Resistance Day!
