Welcome, Tēnā koe, Haere Mai!
Welcome to the 2017 Māori Economic Development & Entrepreneurship Symposium...
A large part of the future of Māori can be determined by a strong focus on economic development with a little bit of entrepreneurship thrown in. The reality is we are a people with a rich and valuable story to tell. We were here long before our fellow New Zealanders trading with each us, buying and selling, building and taking care of the assets we all know today to be towering industries of the New Zealand economy.
There are hundreds if not thousands of initiatives underway right across Aotearoa so the question becomes how can we harness the power of economic development and entrepreneurship?
The 2017 National Symposium is bought to you by Ngā Ngaru because we feel our role is not only to act as a bridge between Iwi and Māori Everywhere – it’s also an opportunity for us to bring thought and knowledge leaders together with every day organisations to see what more we can do as a collective to plot a way forward.
To do that we have developed a program and agenda with a mix of speakers from home and abroad as well as a raft of themes that focus in on the following questions:
“What are we doing?”
“Who else around the world is doing things we can learn from?”
“What more can we do?”
“If we know what we want to do then how can we get there?”
As Chair of Ngā Ngaru I am proud to bring you this exciting, dynamic and important symposium for you , your organisation and our people. Mere Balzer
The focus of the symposium is how do we elevate, grow and develop Māori business and industry, harness the Māori economy and seed both entrepreneurship and innovation. Take a look at out our main themes:
Elevating Māori business
Elevating Māori business is all about looking at more ways and means to further develop the profile of Māori owned and operated / associated business and organisations as well as the immense amount of intellectual that has been built over many years.
Harnessing the Māori economy
What more can we do to grow the Māori economy? Are there additional levers, partnerships or collaboration we can build? What is the potential and possibility of developing trading partnerships between Māori and Indigenous peoples in other countries and how can we take advantage of free trade agreements that have been signed between New Zealand and other nations? What is the Maori economy and what more can we do to build new industries and sectors?
Empowering Māori entrepreneurship
A growing Māori economy can take advanatage of entrepreneurship so how can we do it better or how can we develop and implement additional strategies to empower it? Who else is doing what and where?
Growing the Māori asset base
The Māori asset base is valued in the tens of billions s can we do more to grow it? exactly what does the asset base look like, what is its mix and where are there opportunities to focus in on further development?
Innovation in both the public and private sector of the Māori economy is a must so what more can we do to harness innovation across Māori business, the social economy and more and what new innovative approaches are Māori organisations taking?
