Nelson-Tasman Youth Hui

About this event

LET'S MAKE NELSON-TASMAN THE BEST PLACE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO GROW UP

You want Nelson-Tasman to be a good place for young people to live. Not just a good place - but the best.

But you've got some big uncertainties and questions. What is there to do around here, seriously? Where will I find a job? What's happening with climate change? How can I look after my mates?

And you get frustrated when change happens too slowly. When adults don't seem to listen. Or when your ideas don't see the light of day.

We get it.

And this hui is a chance to make sure your voices are heard and acted on.

Since 2018, over 200 young people from across the Top of the South Island have collaborated at these youth hui to make change in our communities.

Now it's your turn to see what the fuss is about.

WHY JOIN THE HUI?

Well - for a start - you'll get an afternoon off school. Plus you'll get lunch on arrival.

If that's not enough, it's a chance to work with other young people to make our region the best place for young people to grow up.

Also, your voices will be heard by some influential adults when they join in later in the day.

AND WHAT'S THE SCHEDULE FOR THE DAY?

  • 12.30: KAI
  • 1pm: WELCOME
  • 1.30pm: YOUTH BRAINSTORMING WORKSHOP - work together to identify the biggest challenges and opportunities for young people at the moment
  • 3pm: ADULTS JOIN - adults can come along to hear what young people are working on and talk about how to support
  • 4.30pm: CLOSE

IS THIS FOR ME?

We're calling on any young people who are tired of adults making decisions without their input. Come and be part of creating the change you want in your world.

And we're also calling on adults who work alongside young people.

Teachers, parents, counsellors, school camp legends, youth workers, government officials... anybody who is passionate about youth development. You are welcome to join the hui from 3pm onwards.

WHO'S BEHIND THIS?

This is one of several youth hui held across the Top of the South since 2018. You can read about the last hui - held in Blenheim in early 2021 - here. These hui are organised by a group of community and government agencies to ensure young people's voices are heard and acted on.
