Description

New Zealand eScience Infrastructures (NeSI) is pleased to announce its collaboration with the Massey University in running a Software Carpentry workshop at the University Manawatu Campus on June 23-25, 2015.

Software Carpentry's aim is to teach researchers basic computing concepts and skills so that they can get more done in less time, and with less pain.

Our curriculum includes:

Day 1 a.m: Automating tasks with the Unix shell Day 2 a.m: Version control with Git Day 1 p.m: Building programmes with Python

Day 2 p.m: Review and open session

Our instructors are scientists like yourselves:

John Rugis has worked at NSCL, the super-conducting cyclotron lab at Michigan State University, as well as for Hewlett-Packard Research and Development in the USA. John is currently working for the New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (NeSI) as a computational scientist collaborating in biomedical cell modelling.

Sung Bae has a background in algorithm research and has worked as a software engineer for Allied Telesis and at ARANZ Geo in New Zealand. Sung is currently working for the New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (NeSI) as a scientific programmer.

Richard Brown is an applied mathematician with research interests in mathematical modelling and high performance computing. He has previously worked as a postdoc at the BlueFern High Performance Computing Unit in Christchurch. Richard now works as a Mathematics lecturer at Massey university.

Software Carpentry's teaching is hands-on, so participants are required to bring their own laptops. (We will provide instructions on setting up the required software several days in advance.)

See http://sungeunbae.github.io/2015-06-23-massey/ for information about this workshop in particular, or http://software-carpentry.org for information about Software Carpentry. And please have a look at the topic lesson plan templates at http://software-carpentry.org/lessons.html to make sure that you are happy with the content and level.

The cost for the workshop free however registrations are limited and essential. To register, please click 'Regsiter ' button above.

We encourage participants to sign up in pairs or groups, so that you have support applying what you've learned after the workshop.

If you would like more information, please email: events@NeSI.org.nz

We look forward to seeing you there!

New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (NeSI) designs, builds, and operates a shared national platform of advanced computing resources and data services. All researchers in Aotearoa New Zealand have access to NeSI’s platforms. Through NeSI, researchers can access high-capacity CPUs, GPUs and high memory nodes; tailored software environments; expertise in research software and data science engineering; and skills training in computational tools and approaches. NeSI enables researchers to investigate large, unique, or complex projects more easily, quickly, and accurately. To learn more, get in touch: info@nesi.org.nz.
