Netsafe LIVE Session descriptions:

Teachers and Learning Partners (Wednesday, August 25th - 3.30 - 5.00 pm)

Keeping it safe | Keeping it Real - Developing safe, confident, informed and responsible online citizens in the classroom context

One in four young people experience online challenges and whānau often look to the school for guidance. Schools need to offer safe learning environments and as digital technology is a key part of many learning spaces, schools play a pivotal role in helping young people develop the skills, knowledge, and values needed to make safe, responsible and informed choices.

This session will look at online challenges and opportunities students face, and discuss ways to develop ‘digital’ capabilities across the curriculum. We will unpack the Harmful Digital Communications Act, address how to respond to online incidents, identify familiar frameworks to inform classroom approaches, and look at the resources and tools available.

Parents and Whānau (Wednesday, August 25th - 6:00 - 7:00 pm)

Powerful Partnerships – working together to support young people as they navigate the online world.

Online safety for parents and whānau is more important than ever. As young people and children begin to spend more time online, it’s important that parents help them build their knowledge of the online environment and develop emotional and social capabilities to help them make safe and responsible choices when they are online.

So, how do you get started? This session is for parents and whānau who are caring for young people of all ages – from preschool to teenagers - and will look at they can support and enable children and young people to navigate online opportunities, challenges and complexities.

Senior Leaders/Pastoral and e-Learning Leaders (Thursday, August 26th - 3:30-5pm)

Learning and Leading in a Changing Landscape – Approaches to developing online safety, digital citizenship and wellbeing across the school.

Schools are increasingly challenged by the complexities of preparing young people for the digital world, providing safe digital environments for learning and teaching and the need to prepare students for the world they engage in right now, both offline and online.

This session will explore ways leaders can engage all areas of the school in online safety initiatives and approaches, including the management of online incidents and the Harmful Digital Communications Act.

We will discuss ways to support your school to develop shared understandings around online safety, digital citizenship and wellbeing, to prioritise what’s on top, and to plan for next steps.
