About this event

  • 1 hour

Between 1942 and 1945, over two million Allied troops occupied the southern Pacific theatre, the majority Americans in service with the Marines, Army, Navy and Air Force. These men left a lasting impact on the lives of local peoples, especially for the 1400 women from New Zealand who married American servicemen. This talk discusses the social impacts of the American wartime occupation of New Zealand and uncovers the fate of the war brides after they departed Pacific shores.

Angela Wanhalla (Kāi Tahu) is a professor in the History Programme, University of Otago. In this presentation she will discuss the findings from her most recent book, Of Love and Marriage: Pacific Brides of World War II (Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 2023).
