Newsroom: Inside the new home of 'Things That Matter'
Thu 27 April 2017, 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM NZST
During this tumultuous time in New Zealand's media landscape, former NZ Herald editor-in-chief Tim Murphy and former MediaWorks head of news Mark Jennings have just launched a new home for smart digital journalism: Newsroom.co.nz.
The free, independent news and current affairs website went live in March. Newsroom’s first exclusive lead story - exposing caged eggs sold as free range in New Zealand - set a high bar for the type of journalism it will feature. It promises to avoid “journalism’s Crap Trap - a mix of celebrity, crashes, crises, crime, court, social media hot-takes and faux outrage mashed together seamlessly from home and abroad”.
A team of highly experienced journalists have been hired at Newsroom including Bernard Hickey and Melanie Reid. The business model behind Newsroom is a mix of paid subscriptions and corporate advertising.
Tim Murphy will speak to IABC Wellington about how Newsroom was developed, the type of stories it features and its place in the market.
He will talk about the challenges of "doing the news" in an economically viable way in 2017, then take questions from the audience.
Join IABC Wellington for an insightful conversation with Tim over drinks. Chorus, one of Newsroom’s founding partners, is kindly hosting this event.
RSVP by 5pm, Monday 24 April. Please advise of any dietary requirements when you RSVP.
