This webinar will highlight the significance of combining indigenous knowledge - derived from centuries of observations explained through connections with place & how things interact - with scientific techniques & technology.
Guest speakers will provide insight into incredible examples of collaboration and celebration of Mātauranga Māori in recent research as we work towards becoming better kaitiaki of te Moana.

Senior Lecturer @Te Wānanga o Waipapa, University of Auckland -an established world expert on weaving indigenous knowledge & science to realise the dreams and aspirations of the communities he works with.
Dr. Maui Hudson (Whakatohea)
Associate Professor & Director @Te Kotahi Research Institute at the University of Waikato - Dr. Hudson leads the He Papa Moana research aim for the MetService Led Moana Project. He Papa Moana focuses on cross-cultural knowledge exchange and working with Iwi to support better outcomes in the marine environment.
Dr. Kimberly Maxwell (Whakatōhea, Te Whanau-a-Apanui, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāitai)
Post-doctoral Fellow @Te Kōtahi Research Institute, Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato - Dr. Maxwell is working on the Whakatōhea Rohe Moana Interests case study of the Metservice's MBIE Endeavour Funded Moana Project (www.moanaproject.org). Through this mahi Kimberley is developing a Moana Plan for Whakatōhea. In previous work Kimberley helped develop the Waka-Taurua Framework for Marine Co-management as part of the Sustainable Seas National Science Challenge
This webinar will be MC'd by Alison Ballance, a former producer of Radio New Zealand’s weekly science and environment programme ‘Our Changing World’. She brings her passion for meeting and interviewing passionate people, and sharing their knowledge and stories, as well as her background as a zoologist, wildlife filmmaker, writer, and radio producer, to name a few.
