About this event

Te Puna Rangahau o te Wai Ariki | The Aotearoa New Zealand Centre for Indigenous Peoples and the Law presents this annual memorial lecture established in honour of Dr Nin Tomas (Te Rarawa and Ngāpuhi) who passed in February 2014. Dr Nin Tomas was the first Māori person to earn a PhD in law and, as an Associate Professor, was the Law Faculty’s most senior Māori academic. Nin was a founding member of Te Tai Haruru (the Law Faculty’s group of Māori legal academics, professional staff and student leaders) and led the Law Faculty for many years in the development of initiatives in support of te ao Māori, Māori law students and Indigenous peoples’ rights globally.

Amokura Kawharu (Ngāti Whātua and Ngāpuhi) is the Tumu Whakarae | President of Te Aka Matua o te Ture |The New Zealand Law Commission and a former Associate Professor at the University of Auckland Faculty of Law. Amokura practised commercial law in Auckland and Sydney and then worked in academia, specialising in commercial and investment arbitration, property law and international economic regulation. She is a Barrister of the High Court of New Zealand, a Fellow of the Arbitrators’ and Mediators’ Institute of New Zealand, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand. Amokura has a BA/LLB(Hons) from Auckland University and an LLM from the University of Cambridge.
