SynopsisMr Matsui, drawing on his range of knowledge and experiences in foreign service for 36 years, will talk about Global challenges against just and lasting peace, sustainable economy and society and safety and security of human dignity, and the significance of roles of the international organizations, in particular ICAO, IMO, ILO and other UN Specialized Agencies and IAEA. These Agencies are primarily functioning as the rules and international order making, policy advisory and advocacy organs for member states to realize the safety and security and other common interests of our daily life, as well as uniquely addressing the imminent global challenges based on their respective mandates and though multilateral diplomacy of nonetheless growing importance, supported by bilateral and regional relationship, in this complex international situation. He will ask why they matter to us and think with you how we as their responsible users can make most of those international public assets for future.

Bio

Mr Matsui Shinji is a law graduate of Kyoto University in Japan, and of California Western School of Law in San Diego. He joined the Ministry of Foreign affairs of Japan in 1989 and started his service at the Japanese Embassy in USA in 1992, then serving in various capacities, including overseas duties for working with UNHCR, ICAO, IMO, ITU, ILO, UNWTO and UPU. He has also spent time as a legal officer of the IAEA in Vienna (2004-2009) focusing on general legal and advice on nuclear non-proliferation framework to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes. In Montreal (2016-2019), he represented Japan on the ICAO Council and served as 3rd Vice President of that Council.

He is currently serving as the Consul General of Japan in Auckland from June 2023 to support safety of the Japanese community and their business, educational and cultural exchanges, and promote the shared values of New Zealand and Japan and principles enshrined in the international community.

This event is co-hosted by New Zealand Asia Institute and the Global Studies Programme of the University of Auckland.
