NZIA Auckland Branch Spring Series: Extreme Challenges in Precious Places
Event Information
Description
UK-based architect Hugh Broughton addresses What’s Precious? from the perspective of place. Whether designing international science research facilities in the icy environment of Antarctica, or contemporary interventions in peerless heritage buildings, his practice is built on careful consideration of time and context. Hugh will discuss the architectural competition process which has led him to designing an incredibly diverse portfolio of projects, and carving out a most remarkable career path from a childhood love of Thunderbirds.
Speaker
Hugh Broughton, Hugh Broughton Architects
Hugh Broughton trained at The University of Edinburgh and set up his architectural practice in 1995. Hugh Broughton Architects' projects have won awards from numerous organisations including the RIBA, American Institute of Architects, Civic Trust, the Architects’ Journal, the British Construction Industry and Architizer amongst many others.
The practice has won a string of design competitions, including for a new gallery for The Portland Collection, for Maidstone Museum’s new East Wing and most notably for a series of remote projects including Halley VI Antarctic Research Station, Juan Carlos 1 Spanish Antarctic Base, the Atmospheric Watch Observatory in Greenland for the US National Science Foundation and a new health facility on Tristan da Cunha, the world's most remote inhabited island. Hugh Broughton Architects has also been invited to prepare designs for polar bases for India, Korea and Brazil and is now engaged as part of a team with Jasmax to design New Zealand’s Antarctic station Scott Base. As a result Hugh is now considered the world’s leading designer of research facilities in the Polar Regions.
Projects in sensitive locations have been the mainstay of Hugh’s career, in which field the practice has successfully completed projects for many high profile clients including English Heritage, and the Henry Moore Foundation, with projects in development for the Greenwich Foundation, Sheerness Dockyard Preservation Trust, and the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple.
