About this event

The session will be hosted on Zoom and will try to be as interactive as possible. A paper to form a basis for a start to the discussion will be circulated next week. The paper will not be extensive or particularly academic but will cover some of the points it is thought useful to discuss. Likely points of discussion are:

• New business/underwriting measures:

  • Suspension of new business
  • Exclusions
  • Underwriting questions
  • Deferral of active cases

• Experience effects:

  • Mortality
  • Trauma
  • Redundancy covers
  • Disability covers (including impact of economic conditions)
  • Premium “waivers” – including customer hardship support.
  • Lapse effects
  • Are these effects one off in nature or sustained over a period of time? An experience impact or a change in BE assumptions required?

• Operational impacts:

  • Claims handling – number (inundation), medical support, managing by phone
  • Sales/distribution impacts
  • Working from home

• Product changes that could be useful in future

• Reinsurance cover

• Asset value impacts – ultra low interest rate environment

• Inflation assumption

• Data collection – what data should we be collecting (as an industry)?

• Membership desire for guidance on aspects such as:

  • Scenario testing
  • Solvency impacts

• Regulator engagement – RBNZ, FMA, …

The session will be led by David Chamberlain and Hamish Farrar
