Opening address by James Goggin
James Goggin, internationally renowned Tāmaki Makaurau-based designer of Practise, will open Object Book Talks by taking the pulse of current practice, setting the scene for the day ahead.

Quick-fire studies
Four presenters share recent projects, diving into process, materiality and form. Featuring Janson Chau (Alt Group), Aakifa Chida, Arch MacDonnell (Inhouse) and Alice Bonifant.

Designers make books: On process and the role of the designer
In this panel discussion, Dan Rule (Perimeter Books), Kelvin Soh (DayMonthYear), Anna Brown (Massey University Press) and Tyrone Ohia (Extended Whānau) will share their insights into the varied and expansive roles designers take on to bring a book to life. Moderated by Te Kani Price.

Insight into The National Grid
Luke Wood, Matthew Galloway and Katie Kerr will present on the past, present and future of the iconic graphic design journal The National Grid, first published with Jonty Valentine in 2006.

Books make friends: On collaborating over time
In this panel discussion artist Raukura Turei and Katie Kerr (Studio Katie Kerr), and photographer Ann Shelton and Duncan Munro (Lucky Stairs Studio) will reflect on their collaboration towards recent books. Moderated by Gabi Lardies.

Closing keynote: Narelle Brewer
Narelle Brewer is a graphic designer and art director based in Naarm Melbourne who, since 2013, has been designing with independent publisher Perimeter Editions on a variety of artist books, photobooks, monographs, and major institutional publications. In this talk, Narelle will share a range of publishing projects, discussing her oscillating influences and motivations in publishing, and the unique character of each commission. She’ll explore process, collaboration, and how creative intent informs design decisions – from typography and layout to format and materiality – in framing and amplifying the artist’s work.
