About this Event

On the Shoulders of Giants:

A conversation on mentorship and innovation with Uli Maybach, hosted by Kaila Colbin

What role does mentorship play in the development of innovation, inspiration, and success in our shared future? Find out in this fireside chat with Ulrich (Uli) Schmid-Maybach, President of the Maybach Foundation, hosted by Kaila Colbin, co-founder of Boma Global and founder of Boma New Zealand.

If Uli’s great-grandfather, Wilhelm Maybach, hadn’t received the right guidance from Gottlieb Daimler, he may never have invented the internal combustion engine, creating the disruptive ‘mobility revolution’ and laying the foundation for the modern automobile. Mercedes and the world of transportation which we know would not exist.

This is the difference right guidance brings—and why Uli dedicates his time to creating opportunities for the mentorship of talented individuals facing adversities.

Inspired by his great grandfather’s humble origins as an orphan in 1850’s Germany, Uli formed the Maybach Foundation in 2005. Part of the Foundation’s mission is to mentor young, talented thinkers experiencing adversity to create positive social change—individuals who might go on to find new, innovative approaches to solving increasingly urgent problems, just as the young Wilhelm Maybach did. The Maybach Foundation also works to raise awareness of the benefits of mentorship.

About Uli

Ulrich Schmid-Maybach (“Uli Maybach”) represents the fourth generation of the Maybach family business, started by his great grandfather, Wilhelm Maybach, designer of the world’s first high-speed internal combustion engine in 1883 and the first Mercedes car in 1901; and his grandfather, Karl Maybach, who pioneered the large diesel engines that powered mobility by air, land, and sea, including the luxurious Maybach motor cars of the 1920s and 30s.

Mr. Maybach created the Maybach Foundation in 2005 and was inducted into the Council of Mentors of the United Nations Global Youth Leadership Network in October 2006. Over the last 15 years, he has worked continuously to complete varied iconic global projects including documenting the rebuilding of the World Trade Center, building in-country medical competency in East Africa, and training the first person of colour to play for the South African polo team.

About the Maybach Foundation

The Maybach Foundation was founded in 2005 with the mission of showcasing Maybach engineering and design heritage and offers programmes that mentor talent and inspire innovation.

The Foundation focuses on a dual-mission approach: honouring the history of the ingenious designers Wilhelm and Karl Maybach, while developing mentoring projects to build bridges from the past into the future so that new inspirations and innovations can emerge. The Maybach legacy is a testament to the power of mentoring and is based on a simple vision: bringing mobility to land, air, and sea. Through the three Maybach values—quality, innovation, and mentoring—the Maybach Foundation inspires communities around the world to benefit from the impact of Wilhelm & Karl Maybach and supports new generations to change the world for the better.

About Boma

Boma is a global network of local partners offering transformational learning experiences so that, in a world of dramatic and continuous change, we can be more intentional and intelligent about the future.

The roots of the word “Boma” date back to Africa — the cradle of humankind — and lie in the languages spoken in the African Great Lakes. The Boma was a circular enclosure for the community and elders to gather, normally built out of branches. It was a sacred space for community gatherings and meaningful discussions to be had, a space where decisions were made, and actions were taken.
