Description

OPERA: School of Music Festival

One of the year’s musical highlights, Opera Scenes prevails in its capacity to captivate and delight audiences. A vocal feast previewing the future of New Zealand opera with resounding performances from the School’s talented voice students, this year’s programme comprises portrayals of Maurice Ravel’s fantastical fairy tale, L’enfant et les sortilèges, telling of a naughty child taken to task by furniture and homework as they take shape and come to life, plus Samuel Barber’s micro-opera A Hand of Bridge which centres on the unfulfilled desires of two frustrated couples as they engage in their customary game of bridge.

These operatic miniatures are brilliant, diverting pieces, perfect for both operatic amateurs and aspirants alike.

Opera Scenes is the culmination performance of the Wallace Opera Training Programme, made possible by generous support from The Wallace Foundation. The cast consists of undergraduate voice performance students, coached and led by the School of Music’s accomplished academic and performance staff.

Wallace Opera Training Programme

The Wallace Foundation has generously endowed the School of Music with funding to establish the Wallace Opera Training Programme. Renowned patron of the arts Sir James Wallace established The Wallace Foundation and the James Wallace Arts Trust, to foster, maintain, promote and advance the education of New Zealand artists and New Zealand people generally in the creative arts.

The Wallace Opera Training Programme, directed by Head of Voice Dr Te Oti Rakena and Artistic Director Dr Gregory Camp, is a one of a kind incubator for growing the opera stars of tomorrow.

Opera Scenes is the culmination performance by voice students involved in the Wallace Opera Training Programme and this production was made possible thanks to The Wallace Foundation's considerable support.

N.B. It is strongly recommended that you prepay through Eventbrite to be assured of admission. There will be limited door sales, and the venue is Eftpos only (NO cash facilities).
