The Ōtira Tunnel is a true marvel of engineering. Built in the 1900s, this impressive tunnel runs through the Southern Alps in the South Island of New Zealand, between Ōtira and Arthur's Pass. Running 8,529-meter long, at the time of building the tunnel was the longest in the British Empire.
To celebrate this admirable part of New Zealand's history, we invite you to join us for two exciting days of centennial activities.
Tickets to this event include all activities on Friday, 4th of August, a bus trip to the tunnel entrance as well as a packed lunch on the day.
Friday Event Schedule: 10:30am – 4:30pm
- Bus trip to the tunnel portal
- Speeches in remembrance and celebration of the construction and opening of the tunnel in 1923.
- Lunch provided to ticket holders

- A walk-through history displays

This is a fantastic opportunity to spend the day with other like-minded people who have travelled to enjoy the celebrations. We cannot wait to see you on the day!
Some of the committee will be wearing clothing of the day, do feel free to come dressed 1923 style.
Plans are being developed for live entertainment on Saturday evening: there will be a charge for this event. Information will be updated as it becomes available. Tickets will be limited.
Important Note:
The celebration will be held outdoors in the Southern Alps, Ka Tiritiri o te Moana. Due to the nature of winter, please remember to bring an umbrella and warm winter clothing.
