Event description
A solo piano performance by Pascal Harris featuring the music of Mozart, Chopin, Beethoven and Schubert

About this Event

PROGRAMME:

Mozart : Sonata K332 in F major

Chopin : Etudes Op. 10 Nos 10, 3 & 12

Beethoven : Andante Favori in F major

Schubert : Sonata D958 in C minor

This recital juxtaposes the key of F major, with its associations of joy and nature, with the key of C minor with its associations of fate and despair.

This is a rare chance to hear Schubert's great sonata in C minor, the first of 3 sonatas composed just months before his death, it is the most dramatic of the three and imbued with an atmosphere of despair. The finale is one of Schubert's most thrilling, reminiscent of the finale of the Death and the Maiden string quartet. The Mozart sonata, on the other hand, is full of lightness and joie de vivre, especially the sparkling finale. Beethoven's lovely limpid Andante Favori was originally written to be the slow movement of the Waldstein sonata. Chopin's Etudes are virtuosic poems. Here we have the cascading F major etude and the tempestuous 'Revolutionary' etude, in C minor. In between the famous etude in E major, known in French as 'La Tristesse' (sadness) and in Japanese as 'Wakare no Kyoku' (farewell piece).
