Description

De-escalating Conflict

De-escalating conflict is not about trying to resolve or manage issues. Many people faced with conflict or difficult situations exeprience Fight, Flight, Freeze syndrome and their mind is not working very well. Often their behaviour at this point pulls us into that space also. De-escalating conflict is about knowing your own reactions better; having better understanding of what someone else is going through. In the workshop you will develop and affirm effective strategies that gets your own mind back to a safe place; and then bringing the other persons mind to a place where they can think enough to engage with the issue or situation.

Duration - 4 hour workshop.

Purpose:

To raise awareness of peoples responses in conflict situations and to gain specific tools to help deal with conflict.

Objectives:

  1. Understanding fear, grief, anger and distress
  2. Manging difficult conversations
  3. Communicating effectively with people who are scared, angry or unpredictable
  4. Managing your own responses and reactions

The workshop will cover these aspects by delivering three modules:

Module 1- Introduction& Overview

Module 2 - Personal Safety Skills

Module 3 - Coping with an Incident

Total Risk carries out a significant amount of field work interacting with non responsive and unpredictable customers for many companies. This requires us to utilise these skills on a daily basis.

Here is what people have to say about this workshop:

"Total Risk Management has provided Conflict De-escalation face to face training to our organisation for approximately the past 11 years This training has consistently had good feedback from our staff and is a core offering for our frontline staff." Government Agency; HR Capability Team, National

"The training our company received had great feedback - Duncan encourages interactive discussion amongst the group which makes the workshop really engaging and not overwhelming. Duncan's training taught me the importance of empathy and being genuine in your communications, particularly when dealing with a difficult person. A very valuable workshop, not only for work but personally too. I highly recommend Total Risk to anyone needing training in personal safety and conflict de-escalation." Individual, Wellington

"Total Risk are conducting the Personal Safety and Conflict De-escalation Programme for approximately 400 Te Kura staff that have contact with our students. Under the HSWA 2015 we have a duty of care to prepare/train our staff to keep safe when working with students. Comments from our staff at the end of the workshop include:

  • The training is relevant and focused appropriately - particularly around home visits and psycho/social irrational/unpredictable behaviour.
  • Really worthwhile. Good way to understand the different personality types we encounter at work (both colleagues and students). I feel more informed about how to prepare for home visits in a safe way.
  • The course was very relevant and it was good to make links to our students who whilst may not be threatening, with me having an understanding of de-escalation makes me reflect on how I can better structure my conversations with them.
  • This was an excellent, well-run course, easy to take concepts on board, great and very positive discussions ensued, well-tailored for different contact types (home visits, advisories, admin, phones). Thank you for this opportunity to participate.

We are pleased with the content and the professional manner in which Duncan Holland has conducted these workshops." Manager Human Resources, Te Kura - The Correspondence School
