About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Overview:

Growing evidence highlights the critical need for 24-hour postural care management. Individuals with neurological impairments which limit their ability to move and change positions whilst lying are at risk of developing habitual, destructive postures in bed.

These postures can greatly impact an individual’s physiological functioning, health and well-being, and ability to engage in occupations using their wheelchair seating system.

What if you could provide a therapeutic intervention that is gentle, humane and restorative, helping to preserve body shape and musculoskeletal alignment?

This half-day workshop explores the clinical supported lying and positioning approach, which involves an individual using carefully designed supports in bed to:

  • Protect body shape
  • Maintain and stabilise postural alignment
  • Reduce stress on the musculoskeletal system

Participants will gain a clear understanding of the role of supported lying in 24-hour postural care, the assessment process and the key steps to successfully introduce supported lying interventions for at-risk clients.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop, you will:

  1. Identify and describe the path to postural asymmetry in lying
  2. Explain biomechanical forces acting on the body in lying
  3. Assess individuals at risk of developing destructive postures
  4. Conduct a needs assessment for supported lying interventions
  5. Evaluate and compare low-tech product options and formal and informal supported lying and positioning solutions
  6. Demonstrate knowledge gained through product demonstration

Note:

This course is best combined with the half-day Practical Workshop: Supported Lying and Positioning Solutions.
