Wayne Smith is an Associate Professor (Honourary) in the Faculty of Education and Social Work, at the University of Auckland. He has been lecturing in health and physical education teacher education for the past 30 years following 10 as a secondary school HPE teacher. His research and major teaching contributions are in critical pedagogy in physical education and skill learning (how we become skillful). His most recent research has focused on pedagogies for social justice in HPE in Sweden, Norway and New Zealand over a period of six years.
The Philip Smithells Memorial Lecture is a prestigious event that honours an outstanding and esteemed pioneer of New Zealand physical education. Launched in 1985, it is given by invitation from the President of Physical Education New Zealand. The University of Auckland is honoured to be hosting this year’s lecture, which will include a response from Professor Richard Tinning.
